[an error occurred while processing this directive] DM 160A : Upload Using WS-FTP [an error occurred while processing this directive]

These instructions assume you are using a Windows computer that is running WS_FTP (version LE 4.50). If you are at home, make sure you have an active Internet connection. If you are using a Macintosh, follow the Fetch 4 or Fetch 3 instructions instead.

To download WS_FTP, go to:
http://www.ftpplanet.com/download.htm
and select the WS_FTP LE radio button.

1) Insert your floppy disk containing the files you wish to upload into the computer's A drive. (Or use ZIP or cd)

2) Launch WS_FTP.

3) Select the "General" tab if it is not already selected.

4) Click "New" to set up a new profile.

5) Use the following settings:

Profile Name: HTML class
Host Name/ Address: ftp.sasquatch.com
Host Type: Automatic Detect
User ID: (ask your instructor)
Password: (ask your instructor)
Account: (leave blank)

If you're using a computer in the lab, leave the "Save password" checkbox blank.

6) Select the "Startup" tab.

7) In the "Initial Remote Host Directory" box, enter "(leave blank)".

8) In the "Initial Local Directory" box, enter "a:" or the appropriate drive or directory.

9) Click "OK" to connect. (If it asks for a password here, enter it.)

10) Now you'll see a window showing the contents of your local disk on the left, and the contents of our class directory on the right.

9)If you haven't already created your folder (directory) in your class directory, click on the "MkDir" button on the right. Name it "YourlastnameFirstname".

10) Click "OK" to create your folder. After a few moments you'll see your folder appear on the right.

11) Double-click on your folder to see its contents (it should be empty, because you just created it.)

12) Now that you have the proper remote directory (your folder on the server) selected to receive files, you are ready to upload files. To select the file you wish to upload, click on it. The first file you should upload is your home page (called "index.html"), so click on "index.html".

13) Because you are about to upload a text file (not a graphic), make sure that the "ASCII" radio button is selected. (If you were to upload any non-text file, such as a graphic, you would select the "Binary" button instead).

14) To upload the file, click on the arrow button in the middle of the window that points from left to right.

15) After a few moments you'll see your file appear on the right.

16) You have succesfully uploaded your file! You can now continue to upload more files.

If you are having problems connecting to the server, or if the connection keeps dropping, you may need to toggle the passive mode transfer setting. (This may be the case if you are using a high-speed connection such as DSL or ISDN.) To do this, click the "Option" button at the bottom of the main WS_FTP window, then select the "Session" tab, then change the "Use passive mode transfer" setting, then click "OK".

17) When you are ready to view your directory in your browser, launch Netscape or Explorer and go to the following URL:

http://art.sasquatch.com/spring2003/YourlastnameFirstname/
