These instructions assume you are using a Macintosh computer that is running Fetch (version 4). If you are using Fetch version 3, follow the Fetch 3 instructions instead. If you are using Windows, follow the WS_FTP instructions instead. If you are at home, make sure you have an active Internet connection.
| To download Fetch, go to: http://fetchsoftworks.com/ (Ask your instructor about the educational serial number to use) |
1 ) Create (or modify) your document, and add tags to turn your document into HTML.
2) Save your page in "text only" format. (If it is your home page, name it "index.html".)
3) Launch Fetch.
4) Enter the following settings into the "New Connection..." dialog box that appears after you launch Fetch. (If a "New Connection..." dialog box does not appear in Fetch, go to the "File" menu and choose "New Connection...")
| Host: | ftp.sasquatch.com |
| User ID: | (ask your instructor) |
| Password: | (ask your instructor) |
| Initial directory | (leave blank) |
| Non-standard port number | (leave blank) |
| Try to connect | (leave blank) |
(You may need to click on the small triangle that appears above "Shortcuts" to see the "Initial directory" field.)
5) Click "OK" to log in to the Web server.
6) Create a new directory within your class directory called
YourlastnameFirstname (for example, "SmithMary")
To do this, go to the "Directories" menu, choose "Create New Directory..." and name it with your name as indicated above.
7) Open this directory in Fetch (double-click on this new folder after it appears).
8) Make sure the "Format" drop-down menu below the "Put Files..." button says "Automatic".
9) Upload your HTML page into your directory.
To do this, click on the "Put Files" button to navigate to your file. Double-click on the file name to "open" it. At this point you can rename it if necessary. Click "OK" to upload it.
Alternatively, you can simply drag-and-drop the file into the Fetch window.
If you are having problems connecting to the server, or if the connection keeps dropping, you may need to toggle the passive mode transfer setting. (This may be the case if you are using a high-speed connection such as DSL or ISDN.) To do this, under the "Customize" menu, choose "Preferences", then select the "Firewall" tab, then change the "Use passive mode transfers (PASV)" setting, then click "OK".
10) When you are ready to view your page in your browser, launch Netscape or Explorer and go to the following URL:
http://art.sasquatch.com/spring2003/YourlastnameFirstname/
