Upload to webhawks.org with Fetch

These instructions assume you are using a Macintosh OS X computer that is running Fetch (v.5). If you are at home, make sure you have an active Internet connection. If you are using a Windows, follow the CoreFTP Lite instructions instead.

To download Fetch, go to:
http://fetchsoftworks.com/
(Ask your instructor about the educational serial number to use)

1) Open Fetch. If the "New Connection" dialog box does not appear, go to the File menu: File > New Connection...

The window on your screen will look similar to this one.

2) Fill in the "New Connection" dialog box fields with the appropriate values.

  1. Hostname: webhawks.org (the web server Cabrillo provides for student classes)
  2. Username: Your Webhawks user name

Here is how to determine your Webhawks user name:

Your Webhawks user name starts with the Cabrillo course number (for example, "dm60a", "dm160b", "dm160c", or "dm70") followed by your Cabrillo student network account name.

For example, the Webhawks user name for Mary Johnson whose Cabrillo ID number is 1234567 and is in the dm60a class would be "dm60amajohn4567".

  3. Connect using: SFTP (choose from the pull down menu)
  4. Password: Your Webhawks password.

Here is how to determine your Webhawks password:

Your Webhawks password is your birthdate. The format is mmddyy.

For example, if your birthdate is August 28, 1976, your password would be 082876.

3) Click the "Connect" button to connect to webhawks.org

Each user on webhawks is assigned their own directory on the server. You will be taken directly to yours and your Fetch file transfer window will look similar to this.

4) Double-click on the "public_html" folder to open it. If you have not uploaded any files, it should be empty. Only files transfered into the public_html folder may be served by the webhawks.org web server and thus be seen on the web.

When you have opened your public_html directory, your Fetch file transfer window will look similar to this.

5) Now you are ready to transfer files. The easiest way to upload a file is to drag the file icon from a Finder window into the file transfer window. You may also use the "Put" button on the transfer window toolbar or the menu command listed under "Remote > Put" as well.

For downloading, drag the file from the transfer window to your computer, use the "Get" button on the transfer window toolbar, or use the menu command "Remote > Get" .

6) When you can see the file in the transfer window, you have uploaded it! If you have uploaded a file and it doesn't show, try clicking on the "Refresh" button before you re-upload your file.

7) When you are ready to view your page in your Web browser, launch your browser (Safari, Explorer or Mozilla, for example) and go to the following URL:
http://webhawks.org/~yourusername/
to view your home page.
